The performer enters the video call and at once starts an explanation. “Apologies for the delay!” she states, appearing truly regretful. Although she's only a couple of minutes behind, she wants to clarify. “My phone conversations always run long.” I had two calls before this, and I’m like, I’ve gotta stop talking!” Fortunately, in this context, this is exactly what one hopes to encounter. Besides, it’s fairly predictable. Viewers who have seen her fearlessly openly gay and outspoken film Bottoms—which she co-wrote with the director and featured in alongside her friend The Bear’s standout—will be aware that she holds plenty to share, whether on identity, intimacy, or the appeal of forming a youth brawl society. Plus, after watching the new eight-part program titled I Love LA, viewers realize that the star carries additional insights regarding the darker side of young adulthood (As a millennial, Sennott is an honorary member of the gang, straddling eras with a knack for connecting different age groups).

Inspirations and Storytelling Approach

The comparisons to Lena Dunham’s groundbreaking show naturally arise and Sennott readily acknowledges a fan, citing the show in addition to the classic series, the acclaimed comedy and Donald Glover’s series as guides for I Love LA, which details the travails of a social media star Tallulah and close companion and new talent manager portrayed by Sennott. Notably, the biggest spot on creative vision was reserved for the popular sitcom, the show about an emerging Hollywood star navigating in a gritty LA scene (notable statement: “happiness eludes everyone but failures in this city”). Sennott began viewing it amid COVID-19, became “captivated”, and decided to put her own twist on it “with female and queer audiences in mind”.

“I wanted to make a show where the internet, not Hollywood, was the industry, because my career started online,” she says. The idea for this project came—partly—from firsthand, at first rocky, relocation to Los Angeles and from her cosmic event, a frequently discussed occurrence for astrology heads. This represented an era that included her understand major insights, work-wise and in private life. “During my younger years, I was chaotic, often breaking down in public,” she recalls. “In my mid-20s, I moved to LA and got settled. And then I felt like everything started to just fall apart. It was almost like these biblical tests …”

Humble Origins

Growing up in Connecticut, the star started writing and performing stand-up while studying acting at New York University (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts. “Despite trying every conventional route, I couldn’t find my footing,” she states. “Every campus humor group turned me down after tryouts.” I tried out for all the NYU plays and didn’t make it into any of them. And I just felt like, what am I doing here?”

Sennott decided to act independently, appearing at amateur nights with her friend and sharing hysterical (and decidedly) weird skits digitally. One, Baby Cult, followed a group of women fetishistically fixated on pregnancy; a different one portrayed working at a trendy retail outlet as similar to being stuck in a thriller. By chance, she connected with Emma through NYU’s movie community and ultimately starring in her directorial debut, titled Shiva Baby, a stressful film set at a religious event with echoes of the Safdie brothers’ movie. The central motif of her career, she notes, has been contemporaries supporting her, instead of traditional networks. So, not the gatekeepers, then? “They were not involved”, she repeats, adding humorously: “Our victory isn’t their goal.”

Manifesting Dreams

Anyone who questioned about Sennott then will surely be regretting it currently. In what she labels a “incredibly circular” development, she seems to have manifested an ideal role. Previously she uploaded content called on LA life on the internet, in which she mocked movie previews (“Substance abuse is rampant here”). Years later, she’s a lead creator (with the co-writer) of a show about city dwellers managing the perks of online celebrity (such as celebrating at a celebrity’s house) with its pitfalls (your associate being labeled as being a drug-addled thief, and perhaps becoming a risky pariah). Some could simple to produce a show about online fame that was overly idealized—or, even less favorable, one that mocked at its subjects. I Love LA does neither, making for a portrait of privileged twentysomething living that’s candid about the chaos and the shine.
