The beluga known as Jelly Bean’s offspring Bertie Botts is an adorable small “playful character”. The whale Orion – nicknamed “Onion Ring” – is a large but guardian-like companion. Thirty captive marine mammals in a Canada-based entertainment facility have been caught in a struggle between a shuttered park, public officials and welfare campaigners.

But those closest to the whales say the impassioned discussion over their destiny often overlooks the nuances of the whales who, after growing up in confinement, have been carefully observed by the people who interact with them daily.

After the Canadian government blocked the transfer of the belugas to a foreign facility, the embattled amusement park near Niagara Falls where they are held stated it would consider to put them down unless the authorities funds the upkeep of keeping them alive. The nation’s marine resources official has rejected that demand, placing the 30 whales in an ever more uncertain position.

Highly Cognitive Sea Creatures

Experts say that beluga whales’ neuroanatomy, along with their sound replication, intellectual tasks and group interactions indicate they are remarkably smart animals – something one caretaker observed directly.

She spent a significant period as a beluga trainer, a job that entailed earning the trust of the marine predators.

“Establishing those relationships over time takes a lot of dedication and a lot of affection. At the outset, they’re very wary of you,” she said. “Over time, you gain reciprocal understanding. And they start being more vulnerable with you. It’s just so wonderful and rewarding.”

The trainer knew the whales were exceptionally cognitive, but she says she was even so astounded by the details and quirks in their dispositions. She cultivated a special affection for a pair of whales with different natures.

“Eve chose me. The other required effort,” she said. “Both changed the way I view relationships.”

Public Concerns and Facility Decline

Her connection with the whales evolved against a background of increasing societal concern to their confinement.

During her three years at the facility, multiple belugas and the park’s single orca, Kiska, succumbed. In total, nineteen belugas have perished at the park since 2019, a statistic which the facility ascribes to age-related causes, but which activists say reflects the poor conditions in which they were housed.

The park did not admit visitors to the guests over the summer, but the former trainer says she witnessed firsthand effects of the closure. “Structural materials is deteriorating from the pools because they’re falling apart and not being fixed. The whales are inquisitive and so they grab fragments and swim around with pieces in their mouth. It’s distressing to see.”

The park did not reply to a inquiry, but previously stated: “The whales … get far superior health care and 24/7 supervision than any human in the United Kingdom, or anywhere else.”

Fate in Limbo and Potential Resolutions

Burgess was fired from the park in the spring following the passing of Eos, an sick beluga the caretakers had to put down. She said the park believed information of the death were disclosed to the news outlets and she was released not long after.

The lack of clarity over the whales’ fate has left her and other caretakers in distress. She says the facility’s threat to kill its whales is a negotiation tactic and is a “extremely difficult” task, adding any attempts to euthanize even a one beluga would require “significant staff”, vehicles and specialized tools.

“It’s impossible in hell the caretakers would ever do it,” she said.

Burgess supports demands for the whales to be removed right away from the park, with its deteriorating pools and dwindling staff.

In the autumn, the nation’s fisheries minister turned down a request to transfer the whales to China.

“Allowing the proposal would have meant a perpetual situation in enclosure and a return to public entertainment,” the minister stated. “As Canadians, we know that marine mammals should be in the sea, not in enclosures for our entertainment. I could not in ethical standing authorize an transfer that would continue the conditions these belugas have endured.”

But the former trainer said the official’s remarks reflect a more general incorrect perception of the circumstances of living conditions for belugas raised in confinement.

“The people needs to grasp these are whales that have spent their whole lives in enclosed habitats and they will need ongoing assistance for the remainder of their lives,” she said. “The public just don’t realize that it’s not as straightforward as saying ‘close it down’.”

Alternative Habitat and Continuing Discussion

As decision makers attempt to find a solution, suggestions have emerged, some of which have minimal feasibility. One proposal called for the belugas to be freed into the natural habitat of Canada’s north – where whales are a important part of nourishment for Inuit communities.

A suggested refuge in the province of eastern Canada, which recently received official endorsement, has shown to be highly debated. The planned facility, which includes extensive space of protected cove, doesn’t yet exist. Advocates remain optimistic that it could ultimately represent a sustainable resolution for a number of the whales.

But, Burgess says, among caretakers she’s spoken with, there is “doubts there” about what she said is “simply an trial” in the whales’ future.

Different voices say the idea of a protected habitat reflects a broader global shift away from captive facilities and could represent a feasible plan in the coming months.
