A Growing ‘Posh-Poor Divide’: How Affluence and Hardship Now Sit Side by Side in Across England.

In Nunsthorpe, residents occupy homes just several yards from their wealthier neighbours in the adjacent Scartho. One six-foot-tall barricade physically separates the two areas in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, sealing off paths and streets that previously connected them.

“This is the divide between rich and poor,” said Serenity Colley, aged 37. “It’s been like this since I’ve known. I doubt they’ll bring it down because I don’t think they’ll want to associate with us.”

A Stark National Picture

Data from government figures reveals how deep inequality can run, at times over nothing more than a few metres of asphalt, a hedge row or a wall. Years of budget cuts and lack of funding mean a majority of councils now contain a locality classified as one of the poorest in the country.

The spread of deprivation has coincided with a sharp rise in the quantity of places where disadvantaged and well-off residents find themselves living side by side. Just a few years ago, just 65 of the most deprived areas adjoined one of the least deprived. This number increased to 119 in the most recent data.

A Barrier Which Divides More Than Space

In Grimsby, the divide is the most pronounced in the country and painfully apparent. The wall transcends being just a symbolic division; it creates tangible problems for everyday life.

• School runs that should take a quarter of an hour turn into an sixty-minute journey.
• Access to important amenities like supermarkets, schools and employment centres is hindered.
• The area can attract antisocial behaviour, with instances of rubbish being dumped over the wall and related problems.

“You try to maintain a well-kept home and garden, and then you reside facing that,” said one resident, motioning at the corroded barricade.

Local Bonds Amidst Challenges

At Centre4, staff emphasise that support does not recognise addresses. “Where you live doesn’t necessarily indicate your personal struggles,” said director Tracey Good.

Regardless of being placed in the most deprived 10% for income, employment, education, health and crime, Nunsthorpe boasts a strong sense and feeling of community among its residents. By contrast, the neighbouring area is classified among the most prosperous 10% nationally.

Echoes Elsewhere: Stanhope in Ashford

This pattern is repeated nationally. The Stanhope area in Kent, a mid-century housing development, is in the 10% most deprived of neighbourhoods in England. It is closely bordered by spacious detached homes built in the 2000s that are in the top 10% for job prospects and quality of surroundings.

“They might have larger properties, but here there’s more community,” said a long-term resident, aged 63. “You’ll probably find many people in the new builds never even talk to each other.”

The economic divide is evident: an typical three-bedroom house costs about £275,000 on the estate, while across the divide equivalent homes go for about £410,000.

Residents describe a palpable sense of being overlooked. “Our neighbourhood is neglected,” said holistic health worker Susan Riley-Nevers. “In this area our facilities have gradually disappeared, and the majority of the community problems here are related to financial hardship.”

The increase in these ‘inequality borders’ presents a portrait of an increasingly segregated society, where wealth and deprivation are often awkwardly close neighbours.
